Representatives of fishers from Puerto Rico, Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala exchange experiences and opinions about the state of fisheries in their respective countries, the changes they have observed in the sea over the past decades, the urgency of adapting to the consequences of climate change, the need to organize and have representation in decision-making processes, and the role of women in the sector.
The fishers also share solutions to achieve sustainable fishing practices, respecting size limits and closed seasons—especially during spawning periods—and diversifying their livelihoods with non-extractive alternatives. The participants conclude by offering their own advice—from fisher to fisher—for their colleagues across the region.
